Program to Assist Homeowners Struggling with Mortages

Forsyth, Yadkin, Stokes, Davie and Surry counties are among 17 that will take part in a pilot Mortgage Payment Program that begins Monday, creating new aid for homeowners who are struggling to make mortgage payments due to job loss or financial hardships.

Program funding will be used to make mortgage payments for unemployed workers while they seek jobs or complete job training in a new field.  The funding will also be used to assist others, who through no fault of their own, have fallen behind payments due to divorce, serious illness or other temporary hardships.

Homeowners can begin applying for assistance next week through local HUD-approved counseling agencies.  For Forsyth, Davie and Surry counties, this would be the Consumer Credit Counseling Services of Forsyth County.  The counseling services may be reached at (336) 896-1191.

To be eligible for assistance, homeowners must have a good mortgage payment history prior to their job loss or hardships.  This new type of assistance will be made available throughout the entire state beginning December 1.
